Engagement vs. Productivity: A Paradox
This blog is a follow on to an article I wrote for Australia HR Magazine for April 2007 (www.humanresourcesmagazine.com.au) titled "Global Workforce Engagement Vs. Productivity: A Paradox?" It is also available here: (http://humancapitalinstitute.org/hci/tracks_engaging_retaining_talent.guid?_currentTab=_researchTab) The questions raised in the article reflect the questions I was asked at a recent workshop I led in Bangalore, India. Does higher engagement lead to more productivity? Is this the wrong measure? In the 1990s, Sears proved the correlation between increased engagement and better customer service scores leading directly to an increase in revenue growth (See Harvard Business Review, Jan-Feb 1998). The Center for Talent Retention in Denver, Colorado has devised metrics and instruments that also demonstrate the link between increased engagement and improvements to the bottom line (see www.keeppeople.com). Is productivity too complex, too interdependent on other variables to be linked with engagement? What are the best measures for determining the impact of employee engagement? I invite the group from Bangalore, Towers Perrin, the Center for Talent Retention and all of you reading this to join in the discussion. As thy say, many brains are better than one, maybe together we can sort out this paradox.
